Picnic Kibun (PK) is a musical concoction from Chile, Japan and the US. Friends and musical partners since 2007, Tatsu Jones and Juan Necochea have been authoring tunes and pushing Chile’s indie music scene in a direction that places the emphasis on dancing. Famous for their live shows (accompanied by drummer, Francisca Straube from Miss Garrison), they are an independent, two-man band that gives off the same results as a dj would. Their increasing recognition in live performances and media coverage has been adding to their growing fan base, which now extends beyond Chilean borders.
PK rocks in Spanish, English and Japanese, successfully mixing melodic swings with multi-lingual raps. Their essence is a sophisticated hedonism: a sexy social-political expression disguised as an endless, irresistible beat. Their sound is a mixture of digital rock, pop, J-hop and electronica combined with instruments such as the cavaquinho, harmonicas, synthesizers, acoustic and electric percussions and guitars.
The band’s beginnings fall back to the ends of 2006 in Santiago, where almost immediately they won Chile’s most prestigious indie music blog, Super45’s, Best New Sound pick for 2007. Soon thereafter and having edited only a 5 song demo, the production company Sobras asked them to score the music for Transantiaguinos, a nationally broadcasted TV show for Canal13 (Chile). Following the success of the
summer series, the director, Nicolas Lopez, made the music video for PK’s EP single “Adolescent Reactionary” and included “Mawashite” in the soundtrack of his movie, Santos (in co-production with Telecinco and Buena Vista International Spain).
PK released its second music video for the single “Drop your Panties”. Created by French director Yannick Calvez (Chateau Vacant) completely in stop motion, it spread across the internet as a promotional launch to “Fiebre Tagadá”, PK’s debut 18 track album. The video was posted by every local blog as well as international music medias ranging from fashion (Elite models) to national newspaper (EMOL).
The band released its highly anticipated debut album, Fiebre Tagadá, in August 2009 and has been acclaimed to be one of the most exciting Chilean releases of the year by the mainstream media as well as numerous indie blogs. It has been downloaded over 8 thousand times from its official site in the first six months, mostly from Latin America. It has also entered the Hype Machine’s international ranking, competing for the top 100 songs.
2010 has seen PK do a number of collaborations with films and television shows. In Feburary, PK was the main feature of an episode of a cable television program, Tomorrow’s Tracks, on Fashion TV (FTV – Turner Broadcasting). The show aired across Latin America and parts of the USA. In September, PK’s sexy track, “Nalgas Rock”, will be featured as an anthem for one of the principle characters in MTVLA’s Niñas Mal. In October, two of PK’s tunes, ”20pobre” and “Fuck Art Let’s Kill”, will be featured in the upcoming film by Sobras, Qué Pena tu Vida.
PK is currently working on their sophomore album scheduled for release in early 2011. The first single, “Previa-me-up”, will be filmed and produced by a Valparaiso-based production company called Grappi. The video for the second single ¨Semilla¨ will be filmed and produced by the prestigious, Santiago-based production company El Buen Tiempo.
